How do I prepare for ear wax removal?

This is the part that decides whether your ears are cleared in one visit. Please read it before you come.

Use olive oil drops for three to five days first
Two or three drops into each ear, twice a day, right up to the morning of your appointment. Softened wax comes out in one visit. Hard, dry wax often does not, and that is the single most common reason someone needs to come back.

Do not use cotton buds
They compact wax against the eardrum and make the appointment harder. Ears are largely self cleaning, so leave them alone until we see you.

Tell us if anything has changed
Ear pain, discharge, sudden hearing loss, dizziness, a perforated eardrum, recent ear surgery or grommets. Call us before you come and we will tell you honestly whether this appointment is still the right thing.

What happens at the appointment?

  1. Your pharmacist examines both ears with an otoscope and talks you through what they can see.
  2. If there is wax and it is safe to treat, it is removed by microsuction while you watch on the screen.
  3. Both ears are checked again afterwards, and you are told how to keep them clear.
